Data We Collect

In order for ChatterCottage (located at https://chattercottage.com) to perform required tasks, we collect specific data. Some of this data; such as your email address, username, and date of birth, is provided by you directly. Other data, such as your IP address, is given automatically when you visit the site. We collect this automatic data to protect you and the other users of ChatterCottage.

Data Retention

All messages sent on ChatterCottage are kept for thirty (30) days from their sent date. After this, they are erased from our system. After three-hundred-sixty-five (365) days of inactivity, user accounts (paid or otherwise) are erased from our system. There are exceptions to this rule, particularly if you have engaged in illegal activity or attract the attention of law enforcement. If we (ChatterCottage) are served a warrant for your data, we reserve the right to retain all data relevant to that warrant until law enforcement gives us the go-ahead to erase it.

Data Deletion Requests

All users of ChatterCottage are given the right for their data to be erased upon their request. This functionality is provided in your account settings or at https://chattercottage.com/delete-account. After thirty (30) days of your request, we will delete your email address, username, and date of birth. However, messages you sent persist on the platform. If you want your messages to be deleted along with your account, please contact [email protected] with the details of your request.

We do keep unique signatures of your IP address. Your IP address is obscured in this signature, and cannot alone be used to identify you. We keep these signatures to protect users of ChatterCottage. Every year, if your IP address signature does not have any disciplinary action made against it, we will erase the signature.

You may not request to have your IP address signature erased if it has disciplinary actions made against it.

TL;DR

ChatterCottage regularly erases data older than three-hundred-sixty-five (365) days or thirty (30) days, depending on the type of data. If the data is relevant to law enforcement, or if we need to keep the data for the safety of the platform, we will keep it on our servers. We keep IP address signatures, email addresses, usernames, password hashes, dates of birth, and message contents. This data can be deleted upon request, except for IP address signatures.
